“The Role of Vegetation in Determining Droughts Over Monsoon Regions”

Monsoon regions are often prone to droughts. Most of the studies on droughts in literature have been focusing on the influences of tropical oceans and large-scale atmospheric variability. By comparison, the potential roles of land surface and vegetation are far less clear. Through three examples, I will compare the potential roles of vegetation play in determine droughts over Asian, North and South American monsoon regions, to illustrate how vegetation influence can vary across monsoon systems in different climate and vegetation regimes, and their potential contribution to the drought predictability.
