Joong-Bae AHN

Joong-Bae Ahn is a professor emeritus and special researcher of Pusan National University (PNU), South Korea. He had been with the Department of Atmospheric Sciences of the university as a professor for 32 years before retiring in 2023. He received his B. S. at Yonsei University, M. S. at Seoul National University, and Ph. D at Oregon State University.

His major research areas are long-term weather and climate modeling, analysis and prediction, and large-scale atmosphere and ocean dynamics. He has been particularly interested in seasonal prediction using Coupled General Circulation Model (CGCM) for the past three decades. PNU CGCM, he developed for global seasonal prediction, is a participant model of APEC Climate Centre (APCC) for Multi-model Ensemble Long-term Prediction System and an operational model of the Rural Development Administration of South Korea. He has authored/co-authored 12 books and over 210 peer-reviewed journal articles as of March 2024.

Professor Ahn was the President of Atmospheric Sciences section of AOGS during 2018-2020. He served as the President of Korea Meteorological Society during 2014-2015, Co-Chair of Korea Geosciences Union (KGU) Establishment Committee during 2018-2019, and Advisory Professor of APCC during 2010-2015.

He was awarded Order of Merit by Korean Government in recognition of his contribution to the field of climate prediction in 2017, and Prime Minister Award in 2006. Korean Meteorological Society also awarded him Medal of Academic Honor in 2018 and Medal of Merit in 2016.
