Anil BHARDWAJ

Physical Research Laboratory


Prof. Anil Bhardwaj is the Director of Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, India. After PhD from the IIT-Banaras Hindu University, he joined Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1993 at Space Physics Laboratory (SPL), Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Trivandrum. He was the Director of SPL-VSSC during 2014-2017. He has been the PI of SARA experiment on first Indian Lunar mission Chandrayaan-1, MENCA experiment on first Indian Mars Orbiter Mission, and CHACE-2 experiment on Chandrayaan-2. His team have PI-lead experiments on Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and first Indian Solar mission Aditya-L1. His broad research field is planetary and space sciences and solar system exploration. He has published around 200 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, and supervised several Ph.D., M.Tech., M.Phil., M.Sc., B.Tech. students.

Prof. Bhardwaj is an elected Fellow of all three National Science Academies in India, Academician of International Academy of Astronautics (2018), J.C. Bose National Fellow, and has received the two most prestigious science awards in India – Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2007) and Infosys Prize in Physical Science (2016). The Distinguished Alumni Awardee of IIT-BHU (2015) and Lucknow University (2022), ISRO honoured him with their highest award –Outstanding Achievement Award in 2017. He was Vice-Chair COSPAR Commission B (2012-2020), and is currently Chairman of Indian National Committee for COSPAR, SCOSTEP, and URSI.

He was elected twice President of AOGS-Planetary Sciences (2006-2008, 2008-2010), AOGS Planetary Sciences Distinguish Lecturer 2014, and is an active Member of AOGS since its first annual meeting in 2004.
