With the passage of time, the increasing importance of geosciences, in its broadest sense, is being well recognized. During 2007 through 2009, four International years were proclaimed: International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE), International Polar Year (IPY), International Heliophysical Year (IHY), and the Electronic Geophysical Year (eGY). For the very survival and well being of the mankind it is important that we understand how the Planet Earth functions and how we can keep it healthy.

The Asia-Oceania, accounting for more than one half of the global population, having the highest mountains and deepest ocean and now emerging as an economic giant, has to lead from front in human efforts for a better tomorrow. Scientifically and technologically, the countries in the region are progressing fast and significant achievements have been made in several disciplines of space, atmosphere, ocean and earth sciences. Establishment of AOGS in 2003, to understand scientific issues unique to the region, that is more diverse than any other region, was indeed very timely. It is bringing geoscientists together to exchange views, experience and knowledge. AOGS has done well over the past 6 years, and is being recognized as the most important Geosciences Society from the region.

At the present time there are several issues that should draw attention of   AOGS. The future AOGS Vision and Plan shall address them. These include:

  • There are several island nations, and many continental nations with offshore islands, which are more vulnerable to the forecasted climate change. A special effort needs to be made in this direction.
  • The Asia-Oceania accounts for about 80% of all losses due to natural hazards globally. A lot of this loss can be cut through simple approaches (http://www.icsu-asia-pacific.org/resourcecentre_hazard.htm). AOGS shall collaborate with ROAP (ICSU) on this issue.
  • To attract young scientists to AOGS, we must start a Geo-host program, as is being done by IUGG, IUGS and others.
  • Develop joint programs with IUGG, AGU, EGU to address a few global issues.
  • Address relevant societal issues.
  • Promote geosciences literacy in the region.
  • Interact with Public Authorities for developing sound public policies.
  • Develop an interface with industry, particularly the energy sector, so that the best of science can be channelized to industry and in exchange industry could support AOGS projects.
