AOGS Honorary Member

Under Article 4.1(b) of the AOGS Constitution, Honorary Members are persons whose international standing in geoscience or whose service to the Society is recognised by AOGS and who are elected by the General Meeting.
Multiple Honorary Members may be elected in a year. Council's recommendations must be approved by the General Meeting.

Benefits
- A fixed package of USD 2,500 is provided on a reimbursement basis towards airfare, accommodation and other travel-related expenses associated with receiving the honour.
- Honorary Members receive the benefits associated with Regular Membership.
- Honorary Members are exempt from registration-fee payment when attending AOGS Annual Meetings.
Selection Criteria
Nominees must satisfy criterion (a) and at least one of criteria (b) or (c). The applicable criteria are equally weighted:
- Significant contribution to generating activities that enrich AOGS meetings. This criterion is mandatory.
- Significant contribution to raising the profile of geoscience in Asia and Oceania.
- Sustained contribution to the development of geoscientific knowledge relevant to Asia and Oceania.
Nomination Package
The complete package must be submitted through MARS and must include:
- A nomination letter of no more than two pages demonstrating the nominee's contribution to excellence in geoscience or cooperation in Asia and Oceania.
- A selected-publications list of no more than two pages describing the nominee's major publications and identifying the published work that substantiates the case for Honorary Membership.
- A curriculum vitae of approximately two pages covering degrees, employment, honours, memberships and service to the scientific community.
- A one-page statement from the nominee summarising the principal scientific impact of the works identified in the selected-publications list and the nominee's contributions to AOGS activities.
- Three supporting reference letters. At least two must come from outside the nominee's home country or region to demonstrate broad international recognition.
Evaluation & Approval
Calls for nominations should be announced at least nine months before the next AOGS Annual General Meeting. The Awards Committee evaluates and ranks nominees against the approved criteria and submits its recommendations and ranked list to Council at least three months before the Annual General Meeting. Council's nominations must then be approved by the General Meeting.

History
AOGS Honorary Membership was established in 2014. Its policy and nomination requirements were revised in 2026. Superseded versions should be retained in the policy archive and should not appear as current requirements.
