The Asia Oceania Geosciences Society invites nominations for distinguished scientists and outstanding early-career researchers to deliver Key Lectures at its Annual Meeting.

AOGS Key Lectures comprise:

  1. Axford Lecture
  2. Special Lecture
  3. Section Distinguished Lecture
  4. Kamide Award Lecture

Before submitting a nomination, please read the eligibility requirements, selection procedure and speaker benefits below.

Key Lecture Categories

Axford Lecture

The Axford Lecture is a Society-level plenary lecture named in honour of Sir Ian Axford, one of the three major founders of AOGS. It recognizes a leading scientist whose sustained body of work has made an exceptional contribution to geoscience.

Special Lecture

Special Lectures feature leading scientists and academics whose work provides important perspectives on major or emerging geoscientific issues. Special Lectures are Society-level lectures and are not assigned to a particular AOGS Section.

Section Distinguished Lecture

Each of the eight AOGS Sections may select up to one Section Distinguished Lecturer for each Annual Meeting. The lecture recognizes an established scientist with an excellent and sustained record of achievement in the relevant field.

The eight Sections are:

1. Atmospheric Sciences
2. Biogeosciences
3. Hydrological Sciences
4. Interdisciplinary Geosciences

5. Ocean Sciences
6. Planetary Sciences
7. Solar and Terrestrial Sciences
8. Solid Earth Sciences

Kamide Award Lecture

Each AOGS Section may select up to two Kamide Award Lecturers for each Annual Meeting.

The Kamide Lecture recognizes outstanding early-career researchers, including postdoctoral researchers. It is named in honour of Professor Yohsuke Kamide, one of the three major founders of AOGS.

The allocation of one Section Distinguished Lecture and two Kamide Award Lectures to each Section is non-transferable. If a suitable candidate is not selected for a particular allocation, the place will remain unfilled and cannot be transferred to another lecture category.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Axford, Special and Section Distinguished Lectures

Nominees should:

  1. have a sustained record of excellent scientific work, normally extending over at least ten years;
  2. have made significant and influential contributions to their field; and
  3. be capable of presenting a lecture of broad scientific value to the AOGS community.

It is desirable, but not essential, that the nominee was born in, is based in, or has worked in the Asia-Oceania region.

Kamide Award Lectures

A Kamide Award Lecturer must meet at least one of the following conditions at the nomination deadline:

  1. be 35 years of age or younger; or
  2. be no more than seven years beyond the successful completion of a doctoral degree.

Career interruptions arising from childbirth, caregiving, illness or other significant life circumstances may be taken into consideration. Nominators should consult the relevant Section President before submitting a nomination requiring such consideration.

Selection is based primarily on the quality, originality and potential impact of the nominee’s scientific work.

Important Nomination Rules
  1. Self-nomination is not permitted.
  2. The nominator must confirm the nominee’s eligibility and willingness to be considered before submitting the nomination.
  3. Only one nomination may be submitted for the same nominee in each Key Lecture category.
  4. A nomination does not constitute an invitation or appointment.
  5. Incomplete nominations will not be considered.
  6. All nominations must be submitted through MARS by the published deadline.
  7. Nominations received by email or after the deadline will not be accepted.
Before You Begin

Both the nominator and nominee must have a MARS user account.

The nominee’s email address entered in the nomination must be the primary email address associated with the nominee’s MARS account. The nomination cannot proceed if the email address does not match an existing MARS user account.

Please ask the nominee to:

  1. create a MARS account if they do not already have one;
  2. sign in and review the information under My Profile; and
  3. update any incomplete or outdated particulars before the nomination is submitted.

The nominee’s particulars will be retrieved from their MARS profile. All required profile fields must be complete.

How to Submit a Nomination

  1. Sign in to MARS using your own account.
  2. Under Attendee Options, select “My Nominations > Nominate A Key Lecturer”.
  3. Read the eligibility requirements and nomination rules, then confirm that you have understood them.
  4. Select the appropriate lecture category: Axford Lecture; Special Lecture; Section Distinguished Lecture; or Kamide Award Lecture.
  5. For a Section Distinguished or Kamide Award Lecture nomination, select the relevant AOGS Section.
  6. Enter the nominee’s primary MARS email address.
  7. Review the nominee’s particulars retrieved from their MARS profile.
  8. If the particulars are incomplete or outdated, ask the nominee to update their MARS profile before continuing.
  9. Complete the nomination rationale and all other required fields.
  10. Upload any supporting documents requested in the nomination form.
  11. Confirm that the nominee meets the applicable eligibility requirements; the nominee is willing to be considered; the nomination is not a self-nomination; and the information submitted is accurate.
  12. Review the complete nomination and select Submit.
  13. Retain the submission confirmation for your records.
Selection Procedure

Section Distinguished and Kamide Lectures

  1. The relevant Section President forms and chairs a Selection Committee.
  2. The Executive Committee reviews and approves the composition of the Selection Committee.
  3. The Selection Committee reviews the eligible nominations and prepares separate ranked recommendations for the Section Distinguished Lecture and Kamide Lectures, including alternates where appropriate.
  4. The recommendations are submitted to the AOGS Council for consideration.
  5. In reaching its decision, the Council may also consider the disciplinary, geographical and gender diversity of the overall Key Lecture programme.
  6. The Council approves the final selections.
  7. The relevant Selection Committee invites the approved nominees.
  8. A selection becomes final only after the nominee accepts the official invitation.

Axford and Special Lectures

The nominations are considered through a similar procedure, with the selection led by the AOGS President and/or the relevant Society committee. Recommendations are submitted to the AOGS Council for consideration and approval.

The approved nominee will subsequently receive an official invitation. Nominators should not communicate any selection outcome directly to a nominee.

Lecture Arrangements
  1. Axford and Special Lectures are normally 45 minutes
  2. Section Distinguished and Kamide Award Lectures are normally 30 minutes.
  3. The duration and scheduling of Axford and Special Lectures will be determined by the Annual Meeting Program Committee.
  4. All selected lecturers are expected to attend the Annual Meeting and deliver their lectures in the assigned format and timeslot.
Speaker Benefits

Travel support and other benefits are governed by the policy applicable to the relevant Annual Meeting and are not transferable or exchangeable for cash.

Axford Lecturer and Special Lecturer

The Axford or Special Lecturer receives:

  1. complimentary registration for the Annual Meeting;
  2. reimbursement of eligible travel expenses up to SGD2,000, subject to the submission of the required receipts;
  3. one complimentary place at the Conveners’ Dinner;
  4. a commemorative plaque;
  5. a digital certificate and
  6. payment by AOGS of the article-processing charge for the paper arising from the presented lecture, subject to the Society’s publication requirements.

Section Distinguished and Kamide Award Lecturers

Each Section Distinguished or Kamide Award Lecturer receives:

  1. complimentary registration for the Annual Meeting;
  2. reimbursement of eligible travel expenses up to SGD500, subject to the submission of the required receipts;
  3. one complimentary place at the Conveners’ Dinner;
  4. a commemorative plaque;
  5. a digital certificate and
  6. payment by AOGS of the article-processing charge for the paper arising from the presented lecture, subject to the Society’s publication requirements.
Publication Requirement

Selected lecturers are expected to prepare a paper arising from their presented lecture for submission to Geoscience Letters, the official journal of AOGS.

Publication remains subject to the journal’s normal editorial and peer-review procedures. AOGS will cover the applicable article-processing charge in accordance with the Society’s prevailing policy.

Nomination Period and Deadline

The nomination period and submission deadline are announced annually on the website of the relevant AOGS Annual Meeting.
