Session Title Accelerating Citizen Geoscience: Intersection Of Social Media, Innovative Technology, Scientific Research, And Outreach
Main Convener Prof. Kate Huihsuan Chen (National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan)
Co-convener(s) Dr. Wen-Tzong Liang (Academia Sinica, Taiwan)
Mr. Shohei Naito (National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention, Japan)
Session Description Citizen geoscience encourages the public involvement to data collection, analysis, and reporting, and has the potential to greatly improve the emergency response to geohazards (earthquake, tsunami, landslide, and so on). A fundamental change with recent advances in technology, social media and crowd-sourced data had led to better coverage of real-time monitoring, giving way to citizen geoscience with many applications. However, with increasing “Big Data” projects, active partnerships between scientist, school teacher, data scientist, and educator communities are necessary. What are the recent advances in technology, social media, and crowd-sourced data? How do we reach for public involvement with innovative design and sustainability, to improve geohazard risk awareness? We invite abstracts from scientists, educators and as well as those who design, facilitate, evaluate or fund such programs. Anyone involved in Citizen geoscience from various scientific disciplines (e.g., geophysics, seismology, astronomy, geology, biogeoscience, atmosphere and ocean sciences) is welcome to share your experiences, insights, and ideas.
