Brief Description
Long-term earthquake forecast and hazard assessments rely on past recurrence of large and destructive earthquakes. Pre-instrumental earthquakes can be studied from damage descriptions in historical documents, earthquake features in archaeological sites or paleoseismological methods such as trenching faults or tsunami deposit studies. We will compare various methods in various Asian countries and seek for international cooperation for better understand the long-term earthquake potential in the region.
