Brief Description
This session covers topics ranging from the local tectonics associated with dykes and faults, through the tectonics of volcanoes, grabens and calderas, to the regional tectonics of rift zones and hot spots, both on continental and oceanic domains. Particularly welcome are contributions based on field and remote-sensing studies of volcano-tectonic structures (dykes, faults, grabens, calderas, resurgences, laccoliths, flank collapses, magma chambers), geophysical studies (geodetic, seismic, gravimetric), and modelling (analytical, analogue, numerical). Some of the questions that we hope to address in this session are: What stress conditions favour the arrest of magma-driven fractures or, alternatively, their propagation to the surface? How does the surface deformation during volcanic unrest periods relate to the associated subsurface volcano-tectonic processes? What are the conditions for the formation of collapse calderas and grabens, in on-land volcanoes, rift zones and at mid-ocean ridges, and how do these conditions relate to magma-chamber geometries and associated stress fields?
