Brief Description
The dramatic expansion of urban areas in Asia and Oceania poses threats to the availability and quality of groundwater resources. Evaluating the impacts of urbanization on groundwater and assessing their land and water management implications are issues of burning concern. The session would provide an interdisciplinary forum where hydrologists, geologists, geographers, ecologists, civil and sanitary engineers, and town planners exchange current ideas and information concerning groundwater in urban areas. Major topics covered will include but are not limited to: disruption of natural hydrological cycle; soil and groundwater contamination; exploitation of groundwater resources; land subsidence; disruption of groundwater/sea water interaction. The session will cover both observational and modeling aspects of all kinds of groundwater-related issues in urban areas.
