Asahikawa (旭川市)

Asahikawa is located near the centre of Hokkaido, and is the second largest city in the prefecture after Sapporo. The city is full of natural splendour, with the magnificent Mt. Daisetsu-zan in the background and 120 rivers flowing through it. Asahikawa's thriving art world has led it to be called a town for art.

Getting There

By Train:
The Super Kamui limited express service departs from Sapporo to Asahikawa every 30-min. The 80-min journey costs ¥4480 and is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Hokkaido Rail Pass. The journey takes twice as long via local train, but costs only ¥2400.

By Bus:
Highway buses operated by Hokkaido Chuo Bus Service, JR Hokkaido Bus Service and Dohoku Bus Service depart from Sapporo (Sapporo Bus Terminal and Chuo Bus Terminal) to Asahikawa (Chuo Bus Terminal near Asahikawa Station) every 20 to 30-min. A one-way trip takes 120-min and costs ¥2000.

By Car:
Asahikawa is about a 90 to 120-min drive from Sapporo via Doo Expressway.

Hokkaido Traditional Art and Craft Village

Hokkaido Traditional Art and Craft Village is located on a hill with a spectacular view of the Daisetsuzan mountains and Asahikawa cityscape. With three unique art and craft galleries, including one dedicated to Yukara-ori, a unique Hokkaido textile craft, the village is one of the top tourist attractions in Asahikawa.

Higashikawa Town (東川町)

Higashikawa Town is located approximately 20-min east of Asahikawa City and sits at the foot of the Taisetsuzan National Park, the largest mountain national park in Japan.

Higashikawa is as close as you will get to the complete tourism destination, offering something for nature, wildlife, sports, and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園)

Asahiyama Zoo is located just outside of central Asahikawa City in the middle of Hokkaido. The many unique interactive animal viewing facilities has led it to become one of the most popular zoos in japan.

Highlights include a glass tunnel through the penguin pool that allows visitors to observe the birds' underwater flights, and small glass domes in the middle of the polar bear and wolf enclosures that get visitors right upclose & personal with animals. The zoo was also one of the first to organize penguin walks in winter

Getting there: Take bus number 41, 42 or 47 from Asahikawa Station. There are two buses per hour.

Alternatively, take the Fun Fun Bus, a loop bus that connects Asahikawa Station with most of the city's tourist attractions. The bus operates once per hour from July through September only, and takes 55 minutes to reach the zoo from the station. A two-day pass costs 1000 yen, while the same pass that includes one admission to the zoo is available for 1600 yen.

Otaru (小樽)

Otaru is a small harbour city, about half an hour northwest of Sapporo by train. The glassworks shops, coffee shops, restaurants and shopping malls along the canal have been converted from stone-built or brick-built warehouses, which were used for storage in the days when commerce flourished and the canal was crowded with jostling barges. When night falls, oil lamps on the cobbled streets are lit, and the town evokes a gentle, nostalgic mood. Otaru makes a pleasant trip from Sapporo or a nice stop en route to or from Niseko or the Shakotan Peninsula.

Getting There

By Train:
It is recommended to travel to Otaru via train. There are at least 5 trains per hour than run along the JR Hakodate Main Line, from Sapporo to Otaru. The fastest service, the Airport Rapid, reaches Otaru in 30-min, whereas the journey by local train takes 45-min. A one-way trip costs ¥620.

Sapporo-Otaru Welcome Pass:
This pass, available only to travelers from abroad, allows unlimited rides on JR Hokkaido trains between Sapporo and Otaru and on all subway lines in Sapporo for 1 day without additional charges.

Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery (ニッカウヰスキー株式会社)

Nikka Whisky was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, known as the father of Japanese whisky, who studied whisky making techniques for several years in Scotland before bringing the trade to Japan. He was instrumental in establishing the country's first whisky distillery, the Yamazaki Distillery near Kyoto, before he set out on his own to start Nikka Whisky here in Hokkaido. The traditional distillation process that he brought over is largely unchanged today. Nikka whiskies have been recognized to rank among the world's best single malt whiskies and have won numerous awards. The Yoichi Distillery maintains many of its original stone buildings which visitors are welcome to view. A self-guided walking tour of the grounds takes about an hour and follows the whisky-making process from start to finish .

Sakaimachi Street (境町通り)

Sakaimachi Street is an attractive, preserved merchant street in central Otaru, a short walk from the city's canal area. During the development of Hokkaido in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Otaru thrived as a port city, and many trading and shipping companies constructed impressive Western style buildings in the city centre to house their offices and shops. Many of the buildings along Sakaimachi Street have since been converted into restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, boutiques and museums. There are also a few glass workshops for tourists to enjoy a hands-on experience in creating the local Otaru Glass.

Otaru City Museum (小樽市総合博物館)

The Otaru City Museum is made up of two separate museums: a conventional history museum beside Otaru Canal and a less centrally located Railway Museum on the grounds of a railway yard. These city operated museums are a good place to learn about Otaru's history and the early days of the development of Hokkaido.

Noboribetsu (登別市)

Noboribetsu Onsen is Hokkaido's most famous hot spring resort and is surrounded by a virgin forest 200 meters above sea level. It has 9 different kinds of water, containing minerals such as hydrogen sulfide, salt, and iron. The quality of these minerals results in the spa being ranked among the world's most exceptional hot springs.
Noboribetsu has a rich variety of scenery including forests, lakes and marshes. It has been designated as part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park .

Getting There

By Train:
All limited express trains between Sapporo and Hakodate stop at Noboribetsu Station along the way. The one-way trip from Sapporo takes roughly 80-min and costs ¥3850 for non-reserved seat, and ¥4300 yen for a reserved seat. The journey takes 105-min via local train, but costs only ¥2400.
The Noboribetsu Onsen is a 15-min bus ride away from Noboribetsu Station. The local buses are operated by Donan Bus Service and the journey will cost ¥330.

By Bus:
Donan Bus operates one round trip per day from Sapporo Station to Noboribetsu Onsen. A one-way trip takes 100-min and costs ¥1900. A round trip ticket is available for ¥3550.
Alternatively, you can reach Noboribetsu Station via highway buses bound for Muroran. The journey takes 100-min and costs ¥1800. The Noboribetsu Onsen is a 15-min bus ride away from Noboribetsu Station. The local buses are operated by Donan Bus Service and the journey will cost ¥330.

By Car:
Asahikawa is about a 90 -min drive from Sapporo via Doo Expressway. Get off at Noboribetsu-Higashi Interchange.
