AOGS Election of Office Bearers - 2014 to 2016

back

Kalachand SAIN(CV)
Senior Principal Scientist & Head of Gas- Hydrate Group
National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI)

I am happy to be nominated as the President of the Ocean Sciences Section of AOGS. I have been actively contributing to the section activities by convening sessions on Gas-hydrates since 2007. If elected, I will be honored to serve the society to the best of my ability. As Ocean is the major part of the Asia-Oceania region, my goal is to build the finest platform for the growth of Ocean Sciences in the fields of Energy & Mineral Resources, Earthquakes & Tsunamis, Geodynamics, Climates and Coastal Managements in the Asia-Oceania region through focused geo-scientific studies. For example, the sessions on gas-hydrates during the past years have enhanced our understanding on several issues related to Exploration and Production (E&P) of Gas-hydrates. This also provided a platform of International Collaboration for world-class results not only in the Asia-Oceania region, but also in western Europe and north America. In fact, after the AOGS-2009 held in Singapore, we brought out a special volume on Gas-hydrates in the Journal of Marine and Petroleum Geology, 2011 covering the most recent scientific findings from continental margins of the Asia-Oceania region including the results of drilling off Japan, India, China and South Korea. Likewise, if elected, I shall try to publish the scientific results of thematic sessions in Ocean Sciences in reputed journals during my tenure. I shall organize a few workshops and short courses by top scientists on topics of current interest, relevant to society or region-specific as a part of outreach activity. I would also like to attract more participants to the Ocean Science section and support Young Geoscientists for interaction with the experienced geoscientists for the betterment of the Ocean Sciences and Society. I shall also try to develop links with some well-established ocean-related association such as the IAPSO etc. that will definitely broaden the opportunity of scientific interaction and collaboration, and enhance the reputation of AOGS globally. After successful production tests very recently, the interest has spread tremendously for the E&P of unconventional gas-hydrates - a next generation energy source for many countries in the Asia-Oceania region. Besides, there are many offshore basins with large oil/gas reservoirs in the Asia-Oceania region. So, I shall encourage session proposals on conventional and unconventional energy resources having direct impact on industries. This has an added advantage of obtaining financial supports from industries. I wish to work hard for the sustainable growth of Ocean Sciences made by predecessors and make the best efforts to progress further.
