The prime purpose of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) is to promote geophysical science for the benefit of humanity in the Asia and Oceania region. The science issue of Solar-Terrestrial (ST) Section of AOGS includes studies of phenomena related to the Sun, heliosphere and their effects on the Earth and it also emphasizes the diversity and wide relevance to other scientific disciplines and to societal issues.  As an active member of the ST Section, I have been witnessing the progress of the ST Section over the years. I feel happy that I could also contribute to this progress and activities of the section by shouldering some of its responsibilities along with the past and present presidents and other office bearers of the section. In the steady growth period, some of the concrete steps listed below can certainly increase the importance of the ST Section on scientific aspects as well as help to attain a large visibility among the solar-terrestrial physics community. I will work towards to promote the ST Section and its benefit to the enormous members of the region.

  • It is essential to motivate the young scientists in the field of solar and solar-terrestrial physics. Each AOGS meeting should provide opportunities to advance their scientific skills and to build networks among colleagues within their own generation as well as with leading senior scientists in the Asia-Oceania region and other international regions.
  • Major steps can be taken to initiate several awards to recognize outstanding achievements of young investigators in the fields of solar physics/solar-terrestrial relationships and geophysics areas, and the application of science to the public welfare. In the initial stages, nominations for such awards can come from the Asia-Oceania region.
  • AOGS ST Section should organize sessions, in collaboration with other international unions, for example, IAU, COSPAR, etc., on timely and important topics of current interest. Such sessions may be organized at countries where more efforts are already in place to promote the solar-terrestrial physics and AOGS activities can further accelerate the growth and achievements.
  • Initiatives are required from the AOGS ST Section to organize one or more distinguished awards to scientists who have made outstanding contributions to solar and solar-terrestrial physics. The sponsorship for these awards/prizes may be obtained from the reputed academic societies functioning in the countries of Asia-Oceania region. Such awards may also reflect the important past/current scientific aspects of the originating country, in order to recognize the work done by the receiving scientist(s).
  • Concrete steps are to be taken to increase the participation membership in the ST-Section, which should become a tool to lead to a major step forward the solar-terrestrial physics.
