Oceanography is a relatively young yet fast-growing field of geosciences. As a result of tremendous efforts and resources devoted to oceanic research, the last few decades have seen steady progress of this marvelous field, in terms of both science and application. The Ocean Science (OS) Section of AOGS is envisioned as a platform for oceanographers to showcase their current work and to discuss their future plans.

Oceanography is a multidisciplinary science by nature. Its physical, chemical, biological and geological components are intertwined on a great span of temporal and spatial scales, and its interaction with atmospheric and terrestrial sciences is key to understanding the complex system of our planet. The OS Section is envisioned as a platform for scientists from all walks to get together and exchange ideas.

Oceanography is such an extensive and costly science that its advancement depends on international efforts on both regional and global scales. Due to the sheer vastness of the ocean, any large programs of ocean observation have to be endorsed and supported by international communities. The OS Section is envisioned as a platform for scientists from different countries to explore potential collaboration.

Therefore, the OS Section will continue to grow in its capacity and strength in the years to come, and will serve as a multipurpose platform for all AOGS scientists to interact and collaborate. In particular, we will try to promote, organize and take part in a range of international programs of ocean research and education, with an emphasis on the coastal environment and climate change issues that are of great regional interest.
